About us

Established in 1995, Horizon Environnement operates Grandes-Piles, near Grand-Mère, a centre for the treatment and containment of contaminated soil. The centre provides an effective solution for the end management of this type of soil. It is the only facility of its kind serving Central and Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States.

Our mission

To provide high-quality treatment and containment services in accordance with laws and regulations, while protecting the environment and maintaining harmonious relationships with communities on a local, regional and national level.

Our commitment

When you entrust your contaminated soil to Horizon Environnement, you transfer ownership to us. From that moment on, we assume full responsibility. We are committed not only to managing the soil effectively but also to ensuring the short and long-term safety of the treatment or containment.

Research and development

Through our research and development program we collaborate with research organizations on a university level as well as top laboratories and consulting firms. Through our carefully-selected partnerships, we are able to remain on the cutting edge of technology.

Our R&D activities have four main objectives:
  • improving existing soil treatment processes and developing new technologies;
  • developing computerized management of all soil treatment activities;
  • optimizing cell design and research with regard to the geosynthetics used;
  • continuing improvement of leachate treatment methods.

Certificates of authorization

The Grandes-Piles Centre is authorized to receive soils for containment with a level of contamination less than the standards in Annex 1 of the Regulation respecting the burial of contaminated soils (RESC [French acronym]).

Since July 2003, we also possess a certificate of authorization for the thermal desorption treatment of soil containing organic contaminants at concentrations that exceed the standards in Annex 1 of the Regulation respecting the burial of contaminated soils(RESC [French acronym]).

We also have authorizations for biological treatment, soil vapour extraction of volatile products and chemical treatment.
